The London Borough of Hackney will start legal proceedings on Monday to evict.
In the meantime from SNUG’s point of view we are primarily concerned that there is no damage to the trees/plants or any depositing of rubbish.
A few of us from the SNUG committee will try to keep a dialogue going with this group of travellers. So if any issues arise we can discuss these.
For the longer term we could explore installing bollards, so that people can’t simply drive onto the common so easily.
The first I heard about the injunction was via the Hackney Gazette. I have left a message with the Council for the Travellers welfare liason officer to get back to me as I would like to know if there is anywhere suitable within Hackney to move to. I will reiterate that the Stoke Newington Common is not suitable for use as a camping site but I think the issue about welfare and suitable land for the Travelling community has been swept under the carpet for too long and there mutually acceptable solution must be found and Hackney must provide some space.
Cllr Abraham Jacobson
Cazenove Ward
Thank you very much indeed, Councillor Jacobson. While I have no problem with the Travellers being on the Common I accept that it is not ideal and I am delighted to hear of your concern and welcome your your very constructive intervention. Perhaps we can put pressure on Hackney in our different ways and together we may be able to do enough persuade them to change their hearts and minds. I have taken the liberty of noting your email address and will be contacting you directly.
